Our History
The church's roots go back to 1885, when Joseph and Hannah Sherrard founded Sherrard's Chapel on Miller Road in Valley Center. Their wood frame building still stands next to the community cemetery, where a tombstone donated by the church fifteen years ago marks Mrs. Sherrard's grave. At its present site since 1946, Valley Center Community Church consists of the sanctuary, an addition that includes restrooms and a kitchen (1964), and a two-story addition (1972) that includes the present church offices, a nursery, and 10 classrooms. An unconnected structure adjacent the sanctuary, is presently dedicated to the Youth Ministry.
Community Church has had just three pastors in the last 30 years. Reverend Don Anderson served from 1967-1984, and Pastor Dale Meador served from 1984-1997. On July 5, 1998, Pastor John Sale became VCCC's new shepherd, moving his wife Linda and their four daughters from Chicago after serving the Lord there for 22 years. VCCC has cultivated a reputation for a very high view of scripture, the sovereignty of God, and personal discipleship.
A Board of Elders governs Valley Center Community Church since transition from congregational government around 1985. Present staff includes Senior Pastor John Sale; Associate Pastor David Wojnicki; Youth Pastor Tony Suitor; Church Administrator Mike Adams; Assistant Church Administrator Susan Rodriguez; Office Administrators Sharon Brandt, Pauline Chess and Sandy Dambkowski; and Ministry Intern Matt Tyler.
After a number of years of looking for land to expand, Valley Center Church purchased a 20 acre parcel of property on Cole Grade Road at Fruitvale Road in the year 2000. A Building Fund campaign began in September 2004 and architectural plans for a new church campus are currently being prepared. The Major Use Permit process should be completed by the end of 2009 with construction to follow based upon the Lord's timing. The first phase of the future Cole Grade church campus will consist of a sanctuary, classrooms for 120 students, and administrative facilities.
